Festive SunBurn 2.0 Starter Kits, yum, yum!

Hello SunBurn community,

We’ve just released starter kits for SunBurn 2.0 Game Engine - get them while they’re hot!

The package includes a new simplified starter kit designed around the community’s feedback, it features:

  • Core SunBurn code necessary to run the engine and editor (easier to see the base requirements)
  • Getting started guide, on-screen instructions, and in-code guide (easier to see how it works and what to do next)
  • A single empty scene (no assets to remove or delete)
  • Regions to hide non-SunBurn code (like controller code - makes the code easier to read)

Please check out the release notes for information on installing and using the kits (and hints on a cool new feature in the upcoming SunBurn 2.0.10 ;).

This starter kit release was packaged separate from the core SunBurn installer because it was released after SunBurn 2.0.9 already shipped. In the future the SunBurn installer will automatically install the kits (similar to SunBurn 1.x).

Holiday Hours

As the community old-timers probably remember, in past years we’ve taken time off between mid-December and New Years.

However the community has grown significantly since the launch of SunBurn 2.0, so this year we’ve been around to answer questions and help out.

Of course we will definitely be out for Christmas and New Years, but will be around in-between to field questions and chat (though a lot less frequently than normal).

Questions and Answers

What happened to the old starter kits? The old kits are now examples, including the Simple Integration Kit (now the HDR Example) and 2D Kit (now the Top-Down 2D Example). Only the Custom Renderer Kit is not yet converted, but will be soon.

Weren’t the assets removed due to Visual Studio limitations? Yes, but in the end it worked out for the better. This creates a clearer difference between kits and examples, and allows us to release a much simpler and easier to follow kit.

These kits aren’t very festive, what gives? No they aren’t, but development was overseen by Fluffy our VP of Starter Kit Design and Chief Holiday Cheer Officer:

Happy Holidays

We hope everyone has a great holiday! If you have any questions about the kits, SunBurn, Fluffy, or anything else let us know!

Had a linking issue with the last one.

Reincluded the references for SunBurn.

Now I get this: http://tinypic.com/r/n3tagm/7

Hi guys, thanks!

Hi Sharad, did you create the new project using the starter kit for your SunBurn edition (looks like Indie based on your profile)?  Also make sure you have SunBurn 2.0.9 installed.

With those two things covered you should be able to create a new project and have it run without any modifications.

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Looks like I had 2.0.8, not 2.0.9 >,>

Works fine now :D

Looking forward to 2.0.10!

Hi chronic,

I think you already have the answer, but wanted to mention for everyone else:

Starting in SunBurn 2.0.10 the kits are automatically installed with SunBurn and are visible in the Visual Studio New Project dialog.

where is the starter kits that are mentioned on the very first page of help

Ok, I am totally confused.  JohnK States: "Starting in SunBurn 2.0.10 the kits are automatically installed with SunBurn and are visible in the Visual Studio New Project dialog"

I've just installed 2.0.16.5 and I do not see 'anything' relating to Sunburn starter kits when I open VS New projectg dialog.

The starter kit is not listed in the installed templates dialog.  When I go to the C# template folder there is a Sunburn pro folder which does contains the Sunburn-Pro-StarterKit-Windows.zip file.  Has my install not completed correctly?  If so do I need to un/re-install Sunburn Pro?

My mother told me I was an idiot.  When I unzipped the file, the kit showed up.  But I'm still thinking my install may not be correct.  Was the zip file suppose to be extracted during the install process.  I also noted several files in the temp directory I'm assuming are left over from the install.  Shouldn't they have been removed during install cleanup?

Hi bdprgmr,

Make sure you're using Visual Studio 2010 and SunBurn is installed.  Then open VS, click on the "New Project" button, and in the dialog select the "SunBurn <edition> <version>" folder (as an example "SunBurn Pro 2.0.16").

This will display the SunBurn starter kit in the list on the right.

Please note if you've moved your user directory to another drive / location Visual Studio may still be using the original location (I believe you'll need to change this in the VS settings).

Let me know if this helps!
